Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Janitor at The Salvation Army's Nanaimo New Hope Centre plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for our clients, staff, and visitors. This role ensures that our facility remains a safe and welcoming space where individuals can access the services they need to transform their lives.
Accountabilities:
- Monitor and report on maintenance required for janitorial equipment.
- Report any observed maintenance needs, and any safety concerns, and any observed repair issues (e.g. furniture and fixtures).
- Ensure the general upkeep of the facility such as cleaning floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, collection of garbage, vacuuming.
- Check, clean and tidy furniture as required.
- Ensure the general upkeep of external property such as keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleaning outside widows, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks, etc.
- Checks doors and windows to ensure building and resident security and secures the facility as needed.
- Report any noted deficiencies in inventory of custodial supplies.
- Ensure that custodial equipment is in good working condition and report any issues promptly.
- Restock washrooms supplies and distribute received materials as required.
- Spot wash accessible walls, strip, and wax floors and shampoos carpets as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Handle garbage.
- May be exposed to body fluids, odors, and toxic chemicals.
- Work in various weather conditions.
- May deal with people who have angry or abusive behaviors.
- Sharp objects.
- Repetitive strain injuries.
- May be required to lift/move/push up to 25 pounds.

Education and Experience Qualifications:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- High School Graduation or equivalent required.
- Valid WHIMS certificate required.
- Clear TB Skin Test required.
- Criminal record clearance through the BC Criminal Records Review Program required.
- Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License an asset.
- Completion of NHC mandatory, especially ARMATUS abuse training, required.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Six (6) months of related experience in janitorial work.
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment.
- Familiarity with safety protocols, including the proper handling of cleaning chemicals and the use of personal protective equipment.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail to ensure that all areas are thoroughly cleaned and maintained to high standards.
- Good organizational skills to keep janitorial/custodial supplies and equipment in order and maintain a neat and tidy work area.
- Must be able to follow instructions, both verbal and written, working co-operatively with others, and complete to a satisfactory level all assigned tasks.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are important for interactions with colleagues, clients, and the public. The ability to report issues, take instructions, and communicate courteously is essential.
- Strong time management skills to prioritize cleaning tasks efficiently and meet deadlines.
- Ability to identify and address cleaning and maintenance issues independently and make decisions about when to escalate problems.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $20.72 to $20.97 with a maximum of $21.22.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
