Role summary

Nelson Waldorf School seeks a reliable, hands‑on Casual Maintenance and Facilities person to assist the Maintenance Manager in creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, and welcoming school environment. This role supports routine building and grounds work, safety systems, event set up and tear down, and emergency response on an as‑needed basis during school days.

Key responsibilities

  • Support safety and health: Help maintain a safe and healthy learning and working environment.

  • Assist with safety systems: Support monitoring and basic maintenance of security systems, fire prevention equipment, and water testing.

  • Snow removal and waste management: Perform snow clearing, ice control, and routine waste disposal tasks.

  • Emergency response support: Be available as needed to assist with evacuations and emergency procedures; respond to building alarm incidents when requested by the Maintenance Manager.

  • Routine maintenance and repairs: Inspect facilities, identify maintenance issues, perform or coordinate basic repairs in carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical tasks within scope.

  • Utilities support: Assist in ensuring reliable heat, water, and electricity for staff and students.

  • Event support: Assist with set up and tear down for school events, concerts, and conferences.

  • Materials and supplies: Assist with receiving, storing, and organizing materials; report supply needs to the Maintenance Manager.

  • Grounds work: Perform grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, gardening, and seasonal upkeep.

  • WorkSafeBC compliance: Follow WorkSafeBC health and safety regulations and support safe work practices.

  • Volunteer coordination: Assist in supervising volunteers or students when required for grounds or event tasks.

  • Other duties: Perform other maintenance and facilities tasks as assigned by the Maintenance Manager.


Qualifications and skills

Required

  • Demonstrated competence in basic mechanical and/or electrical repair, carpentry, plumbing, and grounds maintenance.

  • Some practical experience in custodial or facilities work in schools, institutions, or similar settings.

  • Ability to follow direction, prioritize tasks, and complete work reliably with minimal supervision.

  • Good communication skills and a collaborative attitude.

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials and perform physical tasks outdoors in variable weather.

  • Clear Criminal Record check

Preferred

  • Experience working in an environment with school aged children.

  • Familiarity with building alarm systems, snow removal equipment, and basic water testing.

  • First aid certification and/or emergency response training.

  • Experience supervising or coordinating volunteers.


Working conditions and schedule

  • possible additional casual, or on‑call hours to cover emergency maintenance, seasonal work, event support, or emergency response.

  • Work hours may also include early mornings, evenings, weekends

  • Tasks performed indoors and outdoors; exposure to weather and physical labor required.

  • Must be able to work safely at heights and with basic power tools.


Compensation and employment details

  • Hourly rate: $24-$26 / hour + 4% vacation pay

  • Employment status: part-time employee; hours may vary starting at 5 hours/ week Mon-Friday excluding stat holidays.

  • Start: Immediate start available.
